Using Break Blocks

Break is the third block type in Arch Calendar for time that does not need a “done.”

Use Breaks for lunch, a walk, a nap, recovery time, or a small pause between tasks and meetings. You no longer need to force these moments into tasks just to make them visible on your calendar.

Breaks also count toward Analytics, so you can see the balance between work and rest.

What is a Break block?

A Break block is time you want to protect, but do not need to complete.

Tasks are for work that needs to be done.
Events are for scheduled commitments.
Breaks are for time that supports your day.

This can include lunch, rest, exercise, meditation, a walk, a nap, buffer time, or personal routines.

When to use Breaks

  1. For rest
: Add lunch, short pauses, naps, or recovery time as Breaks.

  2. For transitions
: Use Breaks between meetings, deep work, or errands so your calendar does not become too packed.

  3. For personal routines
: Add workouts, walks, journaling, or other personal time without turning them into tasks.

  4. For better Analytics
: Since Breaks are included in Analytics, you can see how much of your day went into work, meetings, and rest.

Tips

  1. Don’t turn every pause into a task
: If something does not need to be completed, use a Break instead.

  2. Add Breaks before your calendar fills up
: Rest is easier to protect when it already has a place in your day.

  3. Use Breaks to create space between blocks
: A short Break can help you reset before moving into the next task or meeting.

  4. Review your balance in Analytics
: Breaks help you understand not only how much you worked, but also how much time you gave yourself to recover.
